We just wrapped up a week to remember with our good friends John, Zach, and Rick. This trio of awesome beings came down to share in our volunteer work, lives in Bocas, and score some great surf. John is the heffe in the world of Matuse wetsuits and organized for Zach; a wizard on the surfboard, Shakespeare with pen and paper, and a salt shaker on the dance floor, as well as Rick; an eagle’s eye for photography/videography, and man of a million funny faces to come help out our non-profit and document our world of giving and surfing.
We had an action packed week that started with a morning surf with our local friends in Old Bank followed by an Old Bank Clean-Up Party. The kids showed up in droves for the clean-up and we ended with 60 plus garbage bags of trash. Food and a concert for the community followed the clean-up. Much love and thanks to Roots for supplying the food and Bastimentos Beach Boys for performing.
The following day was the first day of school for Bahia Honda so we had a grand opening party to unveil the playground to the kids and community. All the parents and kids shared in a great day of food, festivities, and playtime around the playground. It was great to see the Bahia Honda community come together for this event since the community is subdivided amongst many isolated villages that rarely ever get together. We brought the boys over to La Loma Jungle Lodge for dinner where we had a great meal with Margaret and Henry as well as the Marj and Gary who donated the money for the playground project. A highlight of the evening was introducing my buddies to the coolest creature ever; The Click Beetle. I will reserve a post exclusive to click beetles soon.
As the swell picked up throughout the week we scored some great surf all over Bocas. Our surfing included some heavy beach break days, left point breaks, and reef break slabs. We ventured out to the far end of Bahia Honda to show the boys a few villages where the Ngobe live, plan for a water tank installation next week, and hang with the bats in the cave. Zach was the brave one who took a swim in the cave with our guide Milton. We escaped the cave without a scratch and ended an unforgettable week of giving and surfing with some dance offs.
Check out the photo album on our facebook page and stay tuned for some future surf publications about our awesome week.
Conclusions for the week are the following
*All of Old Bank loves John, Zach, and Rick. Many did not want Rick to leave and are pleading for him to return and run for president of Panama.
*Zach demonstrated some awesome surfing that inspired the locals.
*John has a new love for Bocas Hot Sauce and spent hours in Bocas searching out a restaurant that had some.
*John also loves chicken from Roots. He ate 75% of his meals there.
*It’s possible that Zach’s dance moves rival his surfing skills
*Rick now goes by Goofy or Doofy if you ask one of the locals. He also provided a number of funny faces only he could pull off.
